PHOTOGRAPHY
It may be unnecessary to state that pointing a camera at a particular object or scene and pressing the shutter will not result in a photograph. The making of a photograph requires a certain intent, a certain sense of exploration, a good dose of curiosity and a willingness to make many choices, knowing that each choice will exact its own influence on the outcome. And a photograph is not a mirror. It is instead an abstraction, not a duplication of the subject. If an idea or an emotion can be fixed in an image in a way that is communicable to the viewer, then a photograph just might come into being. These are some of the things I joyfully wrestle with every time I pick up the camera.
